In Adam James Sorensen’s 2018 release, Dust Cloud Refrain, the Chicago native guides listeners through an intimately vivid landscape of reflective, textural imagery. Sorensen’s lyrics traverse both his own personal story, and that of the great folk singer songwriter, Woody Guthrie. As the narratives navigate through both lives, and touch down in locations such as Okemah, Williamsburg, New Orleans, Salt Lake City, Chicago and San Antone, producer Jamie Mefford (Gregory Alan Isakov, Nathaniel Rateliff) infuses each story with both a traditional warmth, and a current, ethereal edginess. Mefford skillfully captures and creates rich, vibrant sounds and colors that beautifully, and cohesively, frame Sorensen’s compelling tales. Dust Cloud Refrain features a group of uniquely gifted musicians such as Brooklyn bass player Byron Isaacs (The Lumineers, Levon Helm), cellist Christopher Hoffman (Henry Threadgill, Tony Malaby), violinist Jeb Bows (Gregory Alan Isakov), Dutch multi-instrumentalist Jan van Bijnen (Point Quiet, Freek de Jonge), Portland vocalist Michael Jodell (Pete Krebs, Fernando Viciconte), and pianist Matthew James Fullen. Each of their distinct skill sets and contributions help to craft and sculpt Sorensen’s stories into lush, dark, panoramic visions.

Summer has been a lovely adventure so far, and our show at Tiehua Village in Taidong, Taiwan was the highlight. The show was a pleasure to play, the people were gracious, and Taidong is a magical place indeed. Matt completely rocked it on the piano, and our sound guy was perfect. It’s so nice when the planets temporarily align… We have some other interesting shows coming up in Taipei and Kaoshiong this summer, then it’s off to Europe in November/December. While in Europe I’ll be joined again by my very talented Dutch friend, Jan Van Bijnen, on mandolin, dobro, pedal steel, & guitar. I’m really looking forward to that. Thanks so much to all of you kind folks for your support at the shows! I’m also very excited to announce that I’ll be making a new record this winter with some really talented folks……more on that soon. aj
